How has the grant been spent or will be spent?
Staff development and enhanced curriculum provision through use of professional coaching expertise | We have used Sports Premium funding to develop our staff by working alongside specialist coaches who deliver sports lessons for each class on a rotation throughout the year. Teachers and Teaching Assistants work with the coach to ensure continued CPD.
Investment has been made into First Aid training for teachers and Teaching Assistants to support additional physical activity. |
Equipment | This year we focused our expenditure on purchasing new sports equipment and storage to ensure a broad range of sports and physical activities are available for all children. |
Sports visits/events | All children were able to participate in a sports event last year when an Olympic athlete came to visit and engaged in an afternoon of different physical activities. |
Grounds maintenance | We have allocated a proportion of our Sports Grant to maintaining our sports grounds and playground areas to ensure they are always safe and ready for use. This year we were able to support our playground expansion project with sports premium funds. This enabled us to install additional climbing equipment in our Early Years area and to maintain existing artificial grass and natural grass play areas to provide a safe and enjoyable playground environment for all children. |
Support of school travel plan activities | We were able to use Sports Premium funds to support scooter training for our Year 1 pupils which ensured participation by all children. Funds were also utilised to support the walk to school events throughout the year. |
Sports Day resources | Team T-shirts for sports day were purchased this year to ensure inclusivity, team spirit and encourage participation by all. |
Inter school activities | ‘Haddenham Area School Sports Partnership’ (a group of five local schools) was set up to work together to encourage engagement in physical activity. Under this umbrella, the annual dance show ran again this year particularly focusing on engaging the least active children. |
Active after school clubs | This year our after school club included an ‘active club’ and a ‘dance club’. Resources for these clubs were supported by sports premium funds. |
Lunch and playtime enrichment | We have continued to allocate one Teaching Assistant each day to provide enrichment through playground games at lunch and break time. Playground zoning has been introduced to provide targeted activities in different areas of the field or playground. |
What impact has there been on pupil participation and attainment leading to all pupils developing a healthy lifestyle?
At Haddenham St Mary’s we have high levels of participation in physical exercise, offering a wide range of sports and activities. Children behave and achieve well. Researchers believe that exercise acts in different ways that can help improve mood and behaviour in children and adults. As a school we are dedicated to ensure children understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Children have at least two sessions of curriculum sport per week with an additional wake and shake session. There is good coverage of varied sports across the school year to encourage participation by all including the most reluctant and inactive children.
We offer a range of extra-curricular clubs most of which involve physical activity, offering up to 50 places per day including free places for disadvantaged children to ensure access for the most vulnerable in the community. School Travel Plan activities such as walk to school events are well attended with over 100 children and parents joining for the annual Santa stroll. Targeted activities for the least active children have been undertaken including scooter training for Year 1 which has helped encourage greater numbers of children to travel to school by more active and sustainable methods of transport.
Through the playtime and lunchtime enrichment programme a wider range of children are becoming engaged in physical activity and it is helping them to build positive relationships resulting in happier lunchtimes. This year playground zoning has been particularly effective at improving participation in physical activity and has resulted in fewer behaviour issues being reported by staff.
PE & sports premium has ensured investment in the PE curriculum across all year groups through improved sports equipment, development of staff skills and knowledge and a general culture and ethos of engaging in physical activity. This continuing investment has resulted in sustainable improvements in the sports and PE provision at Haddenham St Mary’s CE School.
