Our British Values

The BV agenda permeates all areas of school life in the following ways:

Democracy

A respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process
  • Y2 children support staff with monitors responsibilities around school and as playground buddies.
  • Parents’ views are welcomed at through methods such as questionnaires, feedback at parents’ evenings and with our ‘open door’ policy.
  • Children, staff and parents have an annual questionnaire where they can put forward their views about the school.
  • Pupils have the opportunity to discuss different points of view. Teachers value different viewpoints.
  • Pupils sit on the pupil voice councils – food, school, Eco and sports. Children vote for 2 peers in a democratic election on a termly basis.

The Rule of Law

Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England and supports equality of opportunity for all
  • The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, is consistently reinforced at HSM.
  • Pupils are taught from an early age the rules of the school. These are our Sparkling Rules and classroom rules alongside our Christian values.
  • Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
  • Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce important message about the law to children.
  • Pupils have opportunities to take part in productions and assemblies throughout the year that allow them to speak to audiences and perform.
  • Whilst focusing on all children developing key skills in the core subjects, we ensure they experience a broad and balanced curriculum encompassing music, a variety of sports, the arts and outdoor learning to allow equal opportunity for all.
  • Through our curriculum, pupils have a better understanding of what Britain is and where we are in the world. This encompasses geographical features and history.
  • Our Equality and Diversity statement and objectives state that all members of our school community work to promote equality and equal treatment.
  • To promote and celebrate diversity, the acceptance that we are all different but we are all also equal. We also expect staff to challenge discrimination.

Individual Liberty

Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law
  • At HSM pupils are actively encouraged and supported to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe environment. As a school we teach and provide boundaries for young children to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.
  • Our pupils have the opportunity to make individual choices and express opinions that develop their character and self-belief. They are encouraged to develop these qualities in the context of the rights and needs of other members of our school community.
  • Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our e-Safety, Computing and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs
  • Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an impact on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.
  • Our strong link with St. Mary’s Church allows children to meet members of the church and work with them.
  • Pupils are actively involved in the life of the school.
  • Pupils are encouraged to become positive citizens in the wider community.
  • As well as promoting British values we would actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including ‘extremist’ views and principles.
